Eye strain is one of the most common medical problems that affect people who use computers. It is caused by looking at your computer monitor under bad conditions. These conditions include: improper lighting, bad positioning, and starring at the monitor for long periods of time without giving your eyes a rest. Symptoms related to eye strain include: eye irritation (red, watery or dry eyes), fatigue (tired, aching heaviness of the eyelids or forehead), and difficulty focusing. Headaches, backaches, or muscle spasms can also occur. Even though eye strain can be an annoying problem, it does not mean that your monitor will damage your eyes.
To prevent or cut down on the amount of strain on your eyes do the following:
1. Take periodic breaks from looking at your monitor. While the computer is processing your request look away at an inanimate object.
2. Blink your eyes frequently. This will keep your eyes lubricate, and prevent them drying out.
3. Make sure that your monitor is placed slightly below eye level. Also make sure that all reference materials needed are as close to the screen as possible to minimize head and eye movement and focusing changes.
4. Make sure that you have adequate lighting to see by, and that the light is arranged so the reflection and glare are minimized
5. Get the monitor dusted off with an anti static cloth. This will improve visibility.
6. Get your eyes checked regularly. Your ophthalmologist can examine your eyes, and prescribe the correct glasses if needed.
