Word is one of the most popular word processors around. It is definitely very powerful. Below is a table of what I think are the most useful keyboard shortcuts. I hope you find them particularly useful. They are not any order.
Shortcut | Description |
Ctrl + C | Copies selected text to the clipboard |
Ctrl + V | Paste selected text from the clipboard |
Ctrl + X | Deletes selected text and puts it in the clipboard. When used before Ctrl+V it allows you to move selected text. |
Ctrl+ Shift +C | Copies selected format. |
Ctrl+ Shift +V | Paste selected format. |
Ctrl + B | Turns bold on and off |
Ctrl + I | Turns italics on and off |
Ctrl + U | Turns underline on and off |
Ctrl+ Shift + W | Turns on and off word underline |
Ctrl+ Shift + D | Turns on and off double underline |
Ctrl + Shift +Z | Removes formatting from selected text |
Enter | New line |
Enter + Shift | New line break |
Ctrl + E | Center paragraph |
Ctrl + J | Justify paragraph |
Ctrl + L / Ctrl + R | Left and Right justify text |
Ctrl + Shit + * | Turns on and off the display non printable text |
Ctrl + Z | Undoes last action |
Ctrl + Y | Redoes last action |
Esc | Cancels last action |
Ctrl+ [ | Decreases one font size |
Ctrl+] | Increases by one font size |
Alt + W, and the Alt + Q | Opens Zoom tool |
Alt + Q | Go to “Tell me what you want to do” |
Ctrl + O | Open a document |
Ctrl + W | Close a document |
Ctrl +S | Save document |
Ctrl + N | New document |
Ctrl +P | Print a document |
Home | Go to begging of the line |

End | Go to end of the line. |
Ctrl + Home | Goes to the beginning of the document |
Ctrl + End | Goes to the end of the document |
PgUp | Goes up a page |
PgDN | Goes down a page |
Ctrl+ Alt + S | Split cursor appears |
Shift + Arrows keys | Select text character by character |
Shift + Home | Selects the text to the beginning of the line. |
Shift+ End | Selects the text to the end of the line. |
Alt+ Shift +C or Ctrl + Alt +S | Remove the document window split. |
Shift + PgUp | Selects text page up |
Shift + PgDN | Selects text page down |
ALT | Brings up the letters which allows you to have quick access to different parts in Word’s menus. AKA Ribbon keyboard shortcuts. |

Ctrl + H | Find and replace |
Ctrl + K | Inserts a hyperlink |
ALT + F | Brings up the File Tab |
ALT + H | Opens the Home Tab |
Alt + N | Opens the Insert Tab |
Alt + G | Opens the Design Tab |
Alt + P | Opens the Layout Tab |
Alt + S | Opens the Reference Tab |
Alt + M | Opens the Mailings Tab |
Alt + R | Opens the Review Tab |
Alt + W | Opens the View Tab |
Ctrl + F1 | Expands or collapse the ribbon |
Ctrl + F10 | Opens Content menu |
